Setting the "tona" for fine dining

A passion for the cuisine drove Tina and Tony to open the tona sushi bar and grill in March of this year, but don't allow the name to limit your expectaions.
"If I had known they offered all of this, I would have come in sooner," one dinner guest at the downtown Ogden restaurant commented.
Tona's menu sets the mood by offering no fewer than 18 appetizer choices, ranging from a bowl of steamed rice($1) to delected tempura. Co-owner Tina describes tempura as a style of light batter with a "nice, crunchy texture."
According to the menu, the tempura appetizer is "deepfried prawns and vegetables"($7.50). "Edamame" lies at the middle of the appetizer price range and is described as a "lightly salted boiled soy bean in the pod"($3.50).
Tona offers three distinct seating areas, each with a personality of its own..........

The Bento Box:
Tina is eager to explain the menu and begins with a section titled "Bento Box." the Bento Box is a shallow box divided into five sections. Each section contains a different food item, including rice, vegetable and sumonomo. The final two spaces are occupied by the guest's choice of two items of the listed nine.
Choices include California Roll, Salmon Teriyaki and Chicken Katsu, with a bowl of Miso Soup on the side. The chefs agree that for lunch($8.75), the Bento Box makes and excellent, fast and filling choice, a meal easily enjoyed in the brief time many people have for midday meal.
Larger portions are served in the Bento Box for dinner($13.75)..........

The extras:
When queried about the unusually flavored dressing on the Green Mix Salad, chef Tony hesitates, then reluctantly reveals his secret. "It is a carrot base actually, carrot and sesame."
"As for dessert, tina says "Our cheesecake is very light. We make it here with two kinds of cream cheese. It is very nice and beautiful with our own, special presentation($4.25)."
Tona also serves a Double Deck Mousse(white and dark chocolate) for $4 and three uniquely Japanese ice cream desserts. These creations are based on green tea ice cream.
Tona's beverages are also specifically Japanese. Coke products are available($1.75); however, the Japanese Marble Soda Ramune($2.50), the Mango/Pineapple Frisca($2) or Ice Green Tea($1.75) may better complement the fare.
Two Japanese beers($3.50), plum wine by the glass($4.75) and, of course, sake complete the beverage menu. The sake is served cold or hot and comes to the table in either large($4.75) or small($3.50) servings..........

Monday, December 6th marked the first of potentially many public displays of DaVinci in the local community. In the Tona restaurant and sushi bar on Historic 25th Street, 17 students were given the opportunity to share some of what they had learned in their science clasees with parents, teachers, and other students. Also among the audience members was the Dean of the College of Science at Weber State University.

All of the students, with the exception of Amellia Reeder, presented their Power Point presentations from the Science of Now project. Amellia gave the presentation from the Ecological Footprint project at the begining of the year.

Congratulations to all the these students, and thanks to the owner of the Tona restaurant for letting us borrow their facility for a few hours. We hope to see events like this for years to come.
